Sora Fejga Kuberska (later Gutman)

Chaya Kaminska

possibly Sora Fejga Chorazycka (née Kowalska)

Front row (left to right:

Gitl Chorazycka (later Spilkevitz)

Judes Kuberska (later Kaminska)

Probably taken in Radzilow, c.1917

This wonderful photo was sent to me by Amy Stover, from her great-aunt's estate. The style of dress and the style of the photo are typical of other photos taken in the heim in the first part of the 20th century. This photo depicts six young ladies and an early-middle-aged woman, and there are some strong resemblances.

Another noticeable feature is that four of the young women are dressed in pairs. The first and fourth girls from the left in the back row are wearing identical dresses, and look strikingly similar, so it is reasonable to assume they were sisters, or even twins. The second girl from the left is wearing an identical dress to the girl in front her, whom she is touching. The latter bears a strong resemblance to Gitl Chorazycka, so the former, who looks slightly younger than her, could be one of her sisters.

The more mature-looking woman on the far right of the photo bears a strong resemblance to later photos of Szejna Rajchel Kowalska, so she could be Szejna Rajchel's eldest sister, Sora Fejga, who was Gitl Chorazycka's mother. No photos of Sora Fejga are known to exist, but it is believed that she died in 1917, and the style of this photo is consistent with the late 1910s, as are the ages of "Gitl" and "Sora Fejga".

One thing seems fairly certain: these women are not a mother and six daughters. The ages are too close and there is not enough family resemblance. There are probably two or even three branches of the Kowalski family represented in this photo.

  • Can you positively identify any of the women in this photo?

  • Have you seen the photo before?

If you can suggest answers to these questions, please contact me at saulmarks@hotmail.com.

Photo 03-16-02

This photo was sent to me by Robin Kavall, from her father's file. It was taken in New York, probably in the late 1910s, and the gentleman on the right is her grandfather, Morris Kowalski, who married in New York in 1921. However, the other two men are, at present, unknown. The photo clearly centres on the young gentleman sitting down, so maybe it was taken on an important occasion in his life, such as graduation or engagement.

  • Do you recognise the other two men?

  • Do you know when or why this photo was taken?

If you can suggest answers to these questions, please contact me at saulmarks@hotmail.com.

This is another photo from Robin Kavall, from her father's file. The gentleman on the left is, again, Morris Kowalski, but the other two man is not recognised. He might be a bit older than Morris, maybe in his mid-30s.

  • Do you recognise the man on the right?

  • Could this be Chaim Finkielsztejn, with whom Morris travelled to the US in 1912?

  • Do you know when or why this photo was taken?

If you can suggest answers to these questions, please contact me at saulmarks@hotmail.com.

This is another photo from Robin Kavall, from her father's file. This photo was almost definitely taken between the mid-1930s and mid-1940s, based on the paper and the gentleman's dress. There is a strong resemblance to the unknown man with Morris Kowalski, above, though this photo was taken later.

Bizarrely, this photo appears to have been taken in an empty warehouse or maybe a ballroom of some kind. Possible reasons for this could be that gentleman had just bought the building for use in a business venture, or perhaps was leaving the building after a long association with it.

  • Do you recognise this man?

  • Could this be Chaim Finkielsztejn, with whom Morris travelled to the US in 1912?

  • Do you have a copy of this photo?

  • Do you know where or why it was taken?

  • Do you believe it is the same man as in the above photo?

If you can suggest answers to these questions, please contact me at saulmarks@hotmail.com.

Photo 03-16-05

This is another photo from Robin Kavall, from her father's file, taken in New York. It is thought this is a little girl, though making out his/her gender at such a young age is never easy! Robin's father, Herbert, had two elder sisters who died only days old, and this child is clearly several months old, so it cannot be either of them.

  • Do you recognise this baby?

  • Do you have a copy of this photo?

If you can suggest answers to these questions, please contact me at saulmarks@hotmail.com.

This is another photo from Robin Kavall, from her father's file. Quite simply, no-one knows who this delightful family are! The photo certainly has an American feel to it, and the gentleman's suit is relatively modern, so my guess is it was taken in the early 1930s. The children were, therefore, probably born in the 1920s and the parents around the 1890s.

  • Do you recognise any of these people?

  • Do you have a copy of this photo?

If you can suggest answers to these questions, please contact me at saulmarks@hotmail.com.

Photo 03-16-07

This is another photo from Robin Kavall, from her father's file. The proud woman in the centre seems to be the mother of family in the photo above, and her husband could be the figure sitting on the wall in the background. The woman on the left bears a slight resemblance to the woman in the centre, so it is possible that these two, or even all three, could have been sisters. The photo was almost certainly taken in the mid-1930s, and the ages of the woman in the centre and her husband, if that is who they are, bears this out.

  • Do you recognise these women or the building behind them?

If you can suggest answers to these questions, please contact me at saulmarks@hotmail.com.

This is a very cute photo from Robin Kavall, from her father's file. It was taken in New York and is beautifully mounted. It has the feel of the 1920s to it, but who is it? Clearly, this little girl was dearly loved.

  • Do you recognise this little girl?

  • Do you have a copy of this photo?

If you can suggest answers to these questions, please contact me at saulmarks@hotmail.com.

This is another photo from Robin Kavall, from her father's file. This one is nicely mounted and was probably taken in the US, maybe in the 1920s. There is a strong resemblance between this woman and Gitl Chorazycka (Photos page 7) and, if it is Gitl, her age is consistent with a date of around the late 1920s.

  • Do you recognise this woman?

  • Do you have a copy of this photo?

  • Do you know when it was taken?

If you can suggest answers to these questions, please contact me at saulmarks@hotmail.com.

This photo was part of the estate of Lynda Harvey, and shows a group of children of the Royal College of Music, with stringed instruments. The girl on the far left, in the glasses, is my grandmother, Jane Tiskofsky (later Goodman), and her age dates the photo to approximately 1930. I have included it on Shmuelbennachum.com in order that the other children may be identified and copies of the photo circulated to the families of the other children pictured here. The girl in the front row on the right is known to be Barbara Groom of 21 Silchester Road, North Kensington, and one of the boys on the left is Cyril Preedy.

  • Do you recognise anyone else on this photo?

If you can suggest answers to these questions, please contact me at saulmarks@hotmail.com.

This photo was part of the estate of Jane Goodman, and shows a group of children probably at the Oxford Gardens School, with stringed instruments. The girl on the far right in the front row, in the glasses, is my grandmother, Jane Tiskofsky (later Goodman), and her age dates the photo slightly earlier than the one above, perhaps around 1927. I have included it on Shmuelbennachum.com in order that the other children may be identified and copies of the photo circulated to the families of the other children pictured here.

  • Do you recognise anyone else on this photo?

This tiny photo is from the estate of Lynda Harvey, and has a distinctly New York feel to it. It is similar in style to the Brooklyn photos of the 1930s in the Goldberg group photo pages. The Yiddish translation labels the children as "My son and... grandchild", presumably "your grandchild", but no names are given.

  • Do you recognise these children?

  • Do you recognise the street or building behind them?

  • Do you have a copy of this photo?

If you can suggest answers to these questions, please contact me at saulmarks@hotmail.com.

Photo 03-16-14

These two photos were clearly taken on the same day, probably in the early 1930s. The one on the left shows Samuel Kamensky (aka Shim, né Kaminski) on the far left and his wife Kate (née Cohen) on the far right. However, no-one has been able to identify the women in the centre of the photo. The photo on the right shows one of these women with the Kamensky's daughter, Queenie.

  • Do you recognise the other women in these photos?

  • Could they be members of Kate's family?

  • Do you know where these photos were taken? Liverpool? Wolverhampton?

If you can suggest answers to these questions, please contact me at saulmarks@hotmail.com.

This photo was part of the estate of Lynda Harvey, and bears the Yiddish inscription on the reverse. Sadly, the photo has been torn along a crease and some of the inscription is missing. Based on the members of the Kowalski family shown here, the photo was taken in Israel c.1935.

  • Do you recognise any of the unidentified people in this photo?

  • Do you know when it was taken?

  • Can you translate some or all of the inscription?

If you can suggest answers to these questions, please contact me at saulmarks@hotmail.com.

This is a photo of the wedding of Moshe Peled in Jerusalem, probably in the late 1940s or as late as 1950. His father, Mejer Kowalski, is the man in the hat directly above Moshe. Next to him on the left as we look, in the hat, is Syma Zelda Kuberska (née Fyszkowska). Next to her is her daughter Frume (aka Chasida) Kuberska (later Cohen)

To the right of Mejer is his cousin, Efraim Kamiski, then Efraim's wife Judes (née Kuberska), then Mejer's niece, Yaffa Braverman (née Szejna Rochel Chorazycka). The man at the back in the hat, towards the left of the photo, is Yaffa's husband Marek Braverman. The smiling boy sitting on the left of the photo is Yair Poritzky (later Dotan). The elderly lady whose face appears between the bride and groom is "Moome Chayale Shulzinger", who facilitated many migrations from Radzilow to Israel and is said to have been related to our family somehow. The woman immediately to the right of Yair Dotan as we look is Reichel Shulzinger, Moome Chayale's daughter.

The little boy at the front, between the bride and groom, could be Itzchak Braverman but none of the other people in the photo have been identified.

  • Do you recognise anyone as yet unidentified in this photo?

  • Do you know when the marriage took place?

Photo 03-16-17

This photo was part of the estate of Lynda Harvey, and bears the inscription "With love from Rich" on the reverse. However, it is not known how Rich could relate to the Tyszkowski group families. The photo is small and has bevelled edges, typical of photos from Israel in the mid-20th century. One theory is that rich could be English or American, and sent this photo of himself to friends or family whilst on holiday in Israel. There is a good chance that Rich is still alive.

  • Do you recognise this young man?

  • Do you know if or how he is related to the Tyszkowski group families?

If you can suggest answers to these questions, please contact me at saulmarks@hotmail.com.
